Lemmy.world grew from around 51000 total users the moment 3rd party reddit apps started to shut down on June 30 to 71000 total users at the time of this post (July 1). That’s a 40% growth in about 12 hours!

Welcome newcomers!

Glad to be here and be a part of the community! It’s unfortunate Reddit is going the way of Digg, but definitely looking forward to watching Lemmy grow and develop.

You can really tell, as posts that used to have 1-2 comments now have 4-5. It’s nice chatting with y’all

It’s so wonderful that Reddit, by making a decision that benefits no user/mod/sub, and actively harms users/mods/subs, all in the name of corporate greed, gave Lemmy the boost it needed to become a viable alternative to Reddit.

Thank you, Spez. We couldn’t have done this without you.

The large instances usually subscribe to most of the others but not every instance is equal. You should go to other instances (you don’t have to join) and check their “all” feeds. You’ll definitely see differences.

No, federation means we all see the same content regardless of which site we sign up on with the exception of sites that yours may block.

But be wary that lemmy.ml is a tankie instance and the “.ml” stands for Marxism-Leninism. I generally avoid lemmy.ml communities so I don’t get banned for saying “the uyghur genocide is a real thing” or anything.

Oh ok thanks. I actually thought ml meant machine learning. My mistake not looking up what .ml domain meant.

No worries, .ml is in fact the official domain of the state of Mali. It’s just the interpretation of this single domain owner what he wants to stand “ml” for.

I wondered that and I’m glad I’ve avoided the .ml instance.

Almost every leftist space on Reddit was infected by tankies, hopefully they just stick to themselves (doubt).

They are federated instances. Lemmy is part of the Fediverse, which means distributed servers running the same service (or services) and registering in one instance gives you access to information on the other servers running Lemmy. You can have different communities (‘subreddits’) in different servers but they are all accessible and joinable. This way is not a centralised system.

The Fediverse is not just Lemmy, can be other services like Mastodon, etc.

And the servers all* communicate with each other, so you can see content from one server while logged into another (the URL format would just be slightly different.)

            * Well, except for the cases where a server admin decides to defederate from another server for one reason or another.

This probably happened with every Lemmy server out there.

I was having timeout issues with most that I tried to use.

    Today everything seems normal.

The one I’m on has been rock solid even while the others were struggling yesterday (it’s setup to automatically scale resources with demand).

Tracking sites are lagging behind a bit, but so far lemmy.world is attracting the majority of new users since the reddit API shutdown.

The other big instances like lemmy.ml and beehaw.org are super slow today even though they’re barely taking on new users. My hunch is people are scouting different lemmy instances and settling for lemmy.world because it’s the most stable at the moment.

Hi, my name is power2bill. Feels odd to not have RIF on my phone. I’m going to lurk for awhile and make a comment every 2-3 months. Hopefully, new communities pop up that I used to go on from reddit. I’ll be here enjoying usefully, and sometimes not useful information. Cheers everyone! 🍻

I’m finding that quite a lot of communities exist, they just take more work at the moment. For me, I’ve found a uk community but cannot post due to signing up to .world. creating an extra account doesn’t send the verification email. I see all this of teething problems tho as was always the case with reddit.

What was preventing you from posting there? It should work fine if you search for that community from your current instance (lemmy.world).

I think you might’ve run into another teething problem. This comment seems to be posted 8 times a few minutes apart.

Yeah, i notice that and tried to cleanup a bit. I think you’re correct tho, it was probably a teething issue

I assume you’ve worked it out by now but you do not need a second account! Unless you want to move off .world to something smaller and less laggy ofc which I would definitely understand 😅

I’d like to say glad to bere here, but tbh it makes me sad to leave behind my Reddit account of almost a decade.

Lemmy look promising though (and still slightly confusing :)

I’m glad there’s an impetus to change. I have some reservations about the fediverse, but I think it’s got the right idea and will evolve into something better itself, or help us learn more about designing social media systems for users.

Same. I was 9 years 10 months deep into Reddit, just shy of putting in a dime, all through RiF, and I’ll miss some of the super niche communities I found there.
