This weekend, we will open up a canvas to all Lemmy users, each user will be able to place 1 pixel every minute. This event will last 72 hours, starting midnight EST on the 4th and ending at 11:59pm EST on the 6th

We might need an even faster cool down than 1min and a much smaller canvas for the community size we have right now

A line of guillotines, one for every tech CEO Lemmy doesn’t like (plus a couple of other random people specific instances have beef with, like the Dalai Lama)

How does this work? Like which webpage would people place the pixels? Would it work with Kbin too?

There is a dedicated site which will be announced on the date - creator is adding a way for kbin users to authenticate and join in.

    At least say c/place.

This feels very forced. Could have waited awhile.

Not even sure there’s enough users. Do we really want the bad image of a failed c/place?

it’s a cheap trick they use to make people more territorial and easier to market to… it’s not really relevant here…

We need to get our own traditions

why not start off with our own r/Place

If the plan was to provide evidence for the idea that Lemmy is a second-rate, tryhard copycat, well done!

This community is perfectly capable of generating its own traditions without trying to force it… and the fact that reddit recently tried to use r/Place to distract from the recent controversy makes this imitation that much sadder. If you’re going to crib something, at least go for something that hasn’t been touched for awhile.

beans is one of the most ubiquitous memes on the internet. It’s not “ours” any more than r/place is.

Cool, but I would argue that we should be creating our own traditions, not copying… *checks notes …a sad ploy to increase MAU numbers.

I mean, back in the day, the games we used to play on forums were stuff like “Google Images Word Association” where someone would produce a random image, then someone else uses words that image made them think of, then search images based on that, then add another image to the thread, based on their word-search. Resulted in a lot of dumb funny shit.

Anyway… Great idea, but it pains me that it’s just copying some bullshit from reddit that wasn’t about community but rather a weak attempt to gin up engagement metrics.

It sounds more like someone thinks reddit’s r/place is cool but doesn’t want to support reddit and wants to have it for lemmy. And most importantly, the person brings it to lemmy.

Although it’s just a copy, it’s something fun where you can create something cool. And I celebrate OP for creating this. Count me in.

Not trying to be down on anyone’s good time, I hope folks have fun with it. It’s just my personal opinion on the matter, that it’s better to create our own culture than grandfather in “culture” that wasn’t actually culture but corporate nonsense masquerading as “culture.”

Put it up there with all the people that complain that using Lemmy is “too hard” because it’s not enough like Reddit. It’s a bunch of “well corporations did this, why can’t you?” type feeling. I just don’t like that feeling, I’d rather have a community actually grow organically without corporate influence.

        To quote Boo Boo Bear:

corporations rob us of our dignity and independence

When we rely on them for everything, even our definitions of what “culture” is, we have lost.

          I get your point.

I’m happy enough that lemmy is currently at a point where there’s enough content for every days business. Let’s see where it goes. Everyone can create such little fun games. Now you don’t have to wait for reddit anymore.

Thanks for understanding. I’ve been quite enjoying the content on Lemmy as well. I’m just hoping for more creativity, because I’m positive there’s people out here on Lemmy with brilliant social game ideas, they just haven’t had the exposure they need yet for it to become Fediverse lore.

Almost everything on the internet is just imitation.

Community made canvases sound great for almost any major website to me. I’m down for it.
