I think for me, the internet would have to be totally eclipsed by the enshittification process, for me to revise how I use it and what for. I’ve been online for 28 years now and I am beginning to slow down more and more as time goes on. I used to have been a community seeker, an explorer and a very curious person.

But as I have watched and learned where the internet was going and all of the struggles it has faced. While personally having dealt with my own fair share of troubles with it, I am sometimes under the impression about being more than ready to hang it up and stick to just the minimalist way possible when it comes to the internet.

And we’re talking, only watching YouTube/Netflix, coming on to Second Life to do whatever, only interacting with who I know and just making sure things are taken care of with online bills and such. Nothing more.

I have been using the internet since before ISP’s existed and you had to have a university or government account.

I’ll never stop using it probably; It’s sad to me that people feel like the internet died/they lost something, because I still see all the old stuff there just with layers on top of it that come and go.

I’m a lemming now but I was a redditor before that, and a farker before that, and a mefite before that, and a linkfikter.net browser before that (never had cute names that far back), and dozens of other places that came and went.

Chat is still around. Irc is still around and there are many other modes, i’m in a lovely matrix room with those wonderful 196 cats and I love them. BBS’ are still around. Online gaming is better than ever.

Everyone can have whatever internet they want, I don’t understand the fears.

I’m actually pissed off too that I bought tickets for an upcoming show and it’s apparently REQUIRED you have to download the app to get your tickets. Serious BS. Just email me the fuckers!

I recently bought some tickets myself, and had to pay a couple of bucks extra to not use the app. Really pissed me off, but I almost never go to live shows anymore, so I just paid the stupid fee. I’m not leaving an app on my phone for 3 months for one show.

Another option in the future is passandroid. I have had success with that and was able to add tickets. As a final point i would say rate the apps on their respective stores and give them a terrible rating and state why.

I already actively avoid the shithole that is YouTube, as in I refuse to follow a link if it’s YouTube and Google another path for what I need. Stopped Reddit, my only social media app last June, and now only on Lemmy a couple, the times per week. 5-10 years ago I used to complain about how bad Google was getting, little did I know how truly useless it would get.

You’re not kidding, with Google. Like fucking hell, it feels like the last time Google was remotely useful, was 15 years ago. That’s a long ass time it’s been since Google actually gave you results. Now it just gives results, but no relevancy. The first 3 links are sponsors, the rest of the links, are just either broken or places you’ve been to already where say if you were looking for something for research, then that part of the page doesn’t have what you’re looking for.

And it’s like, Google is so large of a company, you’d think they’d be so big as to care about sorting out it’s search engine so things like terms and certain words don’t collide with eachother right? Like, you google ‘Skillet’ and what do you get? You get more about the band named Skillet, than you do the actual pan skillet. Imagine if you’re someone who wants to know about skillet pans and that’s what you get, it’d be frsutrating.

I’ve already scaled back my use owning in part to the LLM (AI) menace and general enshitification, but if my country (USA) went fully authoritarian I would definitely scale back my use of the Internet even more.

I am there already. I try to self host and my only subscription is a vpn. I of course have to lookup stuff from time to time but its so bad nowadays. The results are garbage or the algorithm feeds you far right nonsense because you accidentally clicked a video on the youtube homepage.

Then every second site wants you to do a captcha or make an account just to read an article… Get the fuck outta here with your account., instantly close the tab.

Then we have the abysmal data mining and constant breaches because these fucks dont want to pay for proper security but ok its because their pages says they use “military grade encryption” which is usually just TLS.

This is my only social media account. Specifically because it is non commercial.

Being retired and living on my grandma’s farm. I could do that today if I had the money. Just tune out everyone and everything. Watch broadcast TV and get movies from the library.

I stopped using all social media besides Lemmy. In part I realized how much of it is used by influencers and companies to sell shit and it’s become worthless. On top of that, when I use Facebook I can barely find actual pictures when I attempt to catch up with family by looking at their pages. Once in a while I make an attempt then give up when all the bullshit gets crammed down my throat. The only reason why my Facebook still exists is the use the messenger to keep in touch with family that way.

I remember using Twitter to actually keep in touch with my gaming friends. Then they started with the algorithms. I used to use Tweetcaster. I stopped using Twitter entirely once that happened because it used to bypass those algorithms and the ads. I stopped using Reddit when Reddit is Fun went down.

Now I just scroll Lemmy. Even that is limited because of all the depressing news. Sometimes I get frustrated by the 15 reposts of the same article and I get tired of having to interact with them to get them to go away. I just don’t get the same reward I used to get when I looked through posts or scrolled through tweets of friends once upon a time. I’m just tired of the enshittification.

  • Complete isolation from the rest of the network. As long as the network and protocols exist, and I have a computer, I can make my own website. Along with others who think the same way. The Internet can never really die except through total infrastructure collapse.
