Any social media platform where you follow people instead of topics.
I have to just sort of flail about in the void looking for people in my same niche to follow, and by the exact same token, no one will ever look at anything I post unless one of the Popular Accounts™ re-shares it. What’s worse, a re-share from a person with a lot of followers has more value than a re-share from an average Joe. That never sat right with me – the idea that one person’s opinions on what was and wasn’t good were more valuable than everyone else’s, and that everyone therefore competed for that person’s attention.
That does make me miss how Facebook and Twitter used to be utilized with friends following each other and posting content that they made and not simply reposting everything that comes their way.
I do value the opinion of people I know but I want hear them say it not some larger personality.
Renting
Going to bars. I can’t drink with my medications and I don’t like going to loud, social places unless there’s some other reason to be there.
You would like pubs.
Really depends on the pub, probably? I’ve never been to one that I liked they were all super noisy.
Taylor Swift. She’s cute I guess but her music is the audio equivalent of a lukewarm stale glass of milk.
Comment of the day award
My coworkers love her because “She’s a storyteller!”
I can think of many bands that do the same thing without making aggressively mid music while doing so.
Isn’t that true for almost all of pop music? It’s intended to be aggressively meh.
I think she’s definitely a cut above your average pop singer just from sheer popularity, and most of her stuff isn’t bad but she definitely isn’t a super strong songwriter.
Minecraft
There’s still time…
Instagram. I have no interest in taking pictures or sharing things regularly. All the content looks so boring I don’t get the appeal. Even on an interesting post the comments are borderline spam fire emojis and people saying let’s go.
It’s used to be just a way to share photos with family and friends, those days are long gone, it’s just ads and fuckwits.
Dating.
I don’t see the point to it, faking that you like someone so your friends and family approve. That isn’t why you date. You date until you find someone you genuinely like.
Watching TV with someone with your head in their lap. Someone to laugh at your bad jokes. Someone to steal your arm at night and use you as an extra blanket. Making breakfast in bed, travelling and bickering over minor things, watching a sunset together.
I miss you Eli
It’s a good concentrate of the good things. I’m sorry you lost your Eli
I feel like you might have some things to work out if you think that’s what dating is supposed to be.
Football (soccer for Muricans), both as a participant and as a spectator.
I don’t understand how you pick a team if you werent born in an area with a team. Like, as a New Zealander, how can I get excited for a premiere league team that I essentially pick at random?
Just pick one. Or don’t. It’s okay to be a fan of the sport. Formula One is a good example. A lot do people have a favorite driver or team, I generally just enjoy the whole thing.
Watching tiktok. I do not get the addiction it provide, but people around me, young and old, has been glued to it.
It really was excellent in its infancy, once you’d honed your algorithm. Some of the funniest, sharpest content on the internet at the time, with a really tight knit in-joke machine - reminiscent of early internet communities. It boomered up and burnt out, but there was certainly a spark there.
Watching TV series’s. As a maker, I really just went to be making stuff all the time, and having to sit and dedicate my time to watching a show really does not interest me. I do like watching longform Nebula content while I’m doing other things though, like Philosophy Tube or Jet Lag: The Game. I also like reading books, just not tv or movies most of the time
Same for me and gaming. Thing is, I love games and always will, but I just don’t have time in my day for it. Solution? Wait a year, read reviews of 1 or 2 best games of the year and then binge them 3 days straight without sleep and trainers (to level past the grindy aspects) until I’m sick of them.
Same with binge TV for me. Its just easier on my schedule if I can dedicate a one off time to it. It keeps me up to date with social trends, whilst not being a dominating factor in my life.
Smoking cigarettes, and these days “vaping.” Never tried.
When I was a kid, an older kid peer-pressured me into smoking a cigarette. I smoked the whole thing and quickly noped out of that. Can’t believe I made the best decision of my life at the age of 6.
do you like drugs? nicotine isnt the worst.
If anybody is reading this and thinking of trying vaping/smoking, do not.
If you never start, you never have to stop, and stopping is the hardest thing I have ever had to do.
Sure it gets me through the day but I have probably wiped 10 years off my lifespan.
I used the nicotine pouches for a year then went could turkey. habit was totally broken.
This is a factually accurate statement, but it reads like you’re encouraging someone to get into smoking cigarettes, which is (I thought) a myth invented by DARE types. Hey OP, speaking as someone with a 15 year off and on addiction to nicotine, steady on your course, bud.
i quit, too. it wasn’t easy. but that doesn’t mean i won’t use nicotine, i just broke the habit.
Football. It’s like you’re supposed to run and kick a ball, but at the same time somehow without just falling in your face. Ridiculous.
A lot of social media sites. Twitter, 4Chan, Tumblr, TikTok, Facebook, Discord, and so on.
There are various reasons for each but it frequently comes down to how much of it is people mindlessly reposting soulless clickbait and how hard it can be to find and track content relative to me.
Also idolizing and following celebrities. I mean I like Jake Gyllenhaal but I would be indifferent if they disappeared off the face of the Earth tomorrow.
If someone dances around the concept of Jake Gyllenhaal disappearing, I will immediately assume they are a swifty.
Is there a thing between swiftys and Jake Gyllenhaal?
Yeah, Taylor Swift used to date him, and she wrote a song about it. The fans don’t exactly like her exes much after she does a song about one of them. Most of the time she kinda sounds like the victim in the lyrics but I think she’s written some ‘I fucked up’ songs. But this is all hear say through my wife, so take the necessary grains of salt.
I love that your cited source is your wife.
