Hi all, looking for an iOS app I can use for Lemmy.world. Mlem is absolutely not the answer, at least not anytime in the near future. Thanks for the help! Any navigation tips for mobile browsing would be much appreciated as well!

I’ve been following memmy which looks like it’s coming along very nicely. The dev has posted a few screenshots and videos with a preview of what it looks like.

You’d be surprised how fast Mlem is coming along.

But for now just open the home page of your instance in Safari, hit “share” then “add to Home Screen” works okay

Agreed! It’s far from being Apollo just yet, but already it’s a fairly good experience.

      Posted from Mlem.

I’m also posting this from Mlem. What works works pretty well, but it is obviously still in beta for a reason, and the biggest reason is that it is missing some major things that make day to day use very difficult. It is missing ability to see your subscribed communities unless you favorited them. It is missing the ability to search for communities, and to see anything you’ve already posted (your profile) or if you have a notification or reply. (Oh, and the ability to edit your posts…I saw a typo in this and had to go to the web version to fix it). All of those core features need to be added pretty quickly.

Jerboa on Android is not perfect either but it is much further along in development at this stage.

Are we not using the same app? Mlem shows your subbed communities by default, and you can search for communities.

Maybe not…there is no place for me to see subbed communities, nor to search within the app. Until the development gets a little further, I’m just sticking with a pinned web app.

What build are you on (Shown in TestFlight)? I don’t see a search bar anywhere on 0.0.6 (22)

Oh I don’t think it’s quite ready for everyday use, it works okay for a bit of scrolling. But the dev is updating it pretty often and wants to get everything working (at least the basics) by the end of the month

Afaik, Mlem is the only option on iOS right now. I believe it will improve quite a bit in tje next weeks. Until then, the web app is the only other option.

Its the tough thing, going forward things will suck before they get better, it won’t be an apples to apples seem less transfer but we are going to have to be willing to sacrifice here and there otherwise we will all go back to Reddit in the end.

Fuck Reddit. I’m happy to sacrifice and I think the masses are too seeing how many new communities are popping up over the last 24 hours. Thank you for your reply!

There isn’t really an alternative to Mlem at present, so the only thing you can do is to make due with it for now and / or use the website. I mainly use the website at present because Mlem doesn’t have a compact mode.

What problems are you facing on the website exactly? I’m just accessing my instance’s website via Safari and it works pretty okay. I’d just recommend opening threads in a new tab, perhaps.

I’m mostly running into loading issues. I am also struggling to navigate and find “my feed” if you will. And I have noticed I have to click things several times before it acknowledges the request.

Why are people expecting Mlem to be Apollo when it’s only been in development for a little over a month? Lemmy is fairly new, so prepare for lots of missing features, but also being along for the ride and watch the community and apps shape themselves.

Mlem is coming along nicely. It’s a far cry from Apollo, but I feel for the devs in this space; they weren’t ready! It’s a lot all at once.

I’ve been flipping between mlem and kbin (as a pwa for now)

Kbin does have a bit more to offer right now in terms of customization, but it’s barely out of prototype phase itself. You can have a compact mode experience there, but both options are limited and struggling to catch their breath, in their own ways.

Mlem just implemented comment collapsing which I definitely appreciate.

At the same time I’m not mad about the lack of polish in this stage. A lot of the things people hated about reddit came from a particular type of mean-spirited and/or low-effort user… maybe the requirement of a little effort and patience/empathy on our parts now could be to our ultimate benefit :)

I think this is a fantastic point! And I think we should just celebrate the fact this is Reddit. I will give Kbin a look over and see how I feel using it! Thank you!

Ultimately I am so impressed with how well this has all handled the mass exodus from Suckit Reddit. I think this has all the potential and I am committed.

I may be a programmer, but as a person that doesn’t not own any Apple devices, I might be speaking out of place.

In the coming few days I’m hoping to learn Kotlin/use my prior experience in Rust and try to help the programmers for the Android app bring out features faster.

My reason for bringing this up is that I can’t be the only one that wants to contribute to a good cause like Lemmy and the hope is that there would be participation for iOS programmers too.

But I feel like these things take time, so for now it is too early to make conclusions, especially given the really short timeframe all the migration is happening in

used to be remmel, but seems that development has stopped - it does not work with newer Lemmy versions.
