Tried searching for this years ago and can’t find it.
I was pretty sure it was Step by Step but I went through every episode description in Wikipedia and didn’t see it but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Google and YouTube are no help.
So Patrick Duffy (or if I’m misremembering, whoever is the male lead of whatever show) is going through a midlife crisis and buys a sports car, though this could just have been for his daily. He gets a vanity plate and he wants it to say “see lover”, as in “see me? I’m a love machine”. But it’s too many letters so he decides to do ‘c lover’. He gets the plate and it says clover and he can’t convince anyone in his family that it’s c lover and not clover. It’s dumb as hell but I just want to see that dumb episode because it’s been stuck in my head for years and it’s like an itch that needs to be scratched.
It was an episode of Empty Nest. David Leisure (playing a lothario) got the license plate. Here’s the scene:
That’s so weird. Tim Heidecker was just talking about this exact thing on a podcast. It was on Empty Nest. The whacky neighbor guy. You tube clip
That’s insane. I’ve had this clip stuck in my head for years. It’s so random and obscure I’m shocked anyone of note discussed it on a podcast. Thanks for the link!
Shout out to David leisure as Isuzu pitch man in that era
Empty nest. https://youtu.be/-VycdJb1fKo
Dude that was fast. Amazing.
I wish I had the time back that I spent reading through every description of every episode of step by step….
This is hilarious. Ever since I saw it as a kid, every single time I’ve seen the word clover, I think of that episode. St. Patrick’s day makes me want to rewatch the whole series.
I tried OpenAI with your exact text and came up empty. Seems it doesn’t have the plot from Empty Nest in its knowledge. So this community, for now at least, is smarter than gpt4 :)
