I might have to look more into my state’s right to be forgotten law. I used PDS for about 2 weeks until no more zombie posts were in my profile (most resurrected by the opening of closed subs). I was cleaning out some gaming book marks and clicked on a reddit thread I’d kept and, lo and behold, I found myself in the comments. Except I’d purged all of those. And searching for myself yields no results. This is…disappointing.
This should probably be a sticky somewhere, but the method to delete all your comments is as follows:
Do a GDPR request for a copy of your data using: https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request. Wait until you get the zip file, then extract it somewhere.
Download the free utility shreddit from https://github.com/andrewbanchich/shreddit , follow the instructions to create an app on reddit and to set it up and then point it to the directory where you extracted your GDPR data using the
--gdpr-export-dir
flag. Here’s an example of the bash script that I used: https://pastebin.com/zk0H1xViLet it run for a couple of hours. It takes about 4 seconds per comment due to rate limiting, so you can more or less extrapolate how long it will take from how many comments you have.
Commenting to find this easier later
There is a save feature on lemmy :)
Sadly not on kbin. kbin has many amazing features, but gosh, do I miss saving.
You can always boost a post/comment and see it later on your profile’s Boosts section.
That’s a fine idea, thank you!
If it isn’t too oldschool for you, there’s also always the choice to make a regular bookmark and give it the appropriate tags to easily find it again.
I use kbin both on the phone and on the pc, so having it all together is more comfortable.
Booky.io is a decent bookmark manager. Switched to it after they killed Google Bookmarks.
Sync them?
you don’t want to use boosts for that?
I didn’t even consider it. Good suggestion, that is what I’ll do from now on.
A true Chad use both
Maybe there is, but I don’t see one easily accessible on Memmy
Your are right! I cannot find a way to save a comment on Lemmy. However, saving posts appears to be possible with the bookmark logo. I assume it is on the roadmap
been waiting for weeks at this point
Does it work on permanently suspended accounts?
(The reason for was for “mod abuse” for reporting too much misinformation in a right-wing safe space subreddit, in case anybody was wondering.)
Is it just me or is “permanently suspended” an oxymoron?
Yeah, it’s stupidly euphemistic. I’m not sure if that language is used just to distinguish it as a sitewide action by the admins (as opposed to a single-subreddit “ban” from that sub’s mods), or if there’s some more calculated/nefarious reason for it (maybe being “banned” from an account has legal implications that being “suspended” doesn’t?).
Surprisingly, it seems you can still edit and delete comments even with a suspended account, so it may still work.
What I’m not sure of is if you can still go to preferences and create an app for access to the API, which shreddit needs to do its automated work.
No. You need a working account.
So being banned means you forfeit control of your data? 🤔
If you’re allready making a GDPR request, why not use it to have them delete the account and all its contents?
Because they don’t delete your data. They just disassociate all your posts and comments from your username.
