I’ve only made two posts so far, but everyone has given legitimate and intelligent responses to both. It’s made me realize how not used to that I had become. It’s an overwhelming positive feeling to not be nervous about sharing with this community. Thank you to all of you
@Calvinball @petrescatraian lurkers surely never 🤔 having said that I’ve been watching this this discussion thread grow and have to say I agree with the OP although like you, on Friendica also although still finding my feet a little.
I wonder if there is some sense of forums that could be obtained through use of groups, although subtly different I guess 🤔
Only really used Mastodon and Pixelfed in the past. I guess these have their place and I wouldn’t knock them esp if folks have not used in a while as it’s possible the product may have seen improvements (not sure).
Interesting times for certain, even if the rumblings over Meta are unnerving at times.@silvercloudfox Yea. Even if there are so little people around here compared with other places, people on Mastodon and on Lemmy (to a certain degree) have been generally very nice 😁

You mean traditional forums? tbh I kinda see Lemmy as a good basis for a forum, lol. Beehaw with it’s communities being created only by admins feels like it. Then there’s FediBB which (when it loads properly) looks like a full-fledged forum (although it is lemmy-based as well).
And yea. Every platform has its place, it depends on whom 😁
I’ve been looking to get rid of Facebook for a long time myself tbh for a long time. I don’t think people will get here, tho. Friendica is more advanced than the others, while people that are on Facebook do not seem to me the ones that would even understand Mastodon (I am more tech minded so I have more patience, this is why I got to like this network). Besides that, Facebook was really built on a privacy invasive model from the get-go, as I remember that when joining it, you could import your contacts from your contact list and find other friends, and voilà, you had some friends already 😁 Friendica certainly does not have this.
Yeah, agree to this. Nice to be a part of a well tended community with some nice folks. Keep the engagement coming!
Same here. I was skeptical I would actually adopt a reddit alternative after being so ingrained for over a decade but this place has been awesome. Thanks to all the admins and mods 🙏
How are you making post? I tried to make two post but they look like comments?
If you are using kbin try the option to create an “article”. Thats the most similar option to the traditional reddit post.
Yeah, it is really nice when people don’t respond with troll memes or comments.
Yeah these alternate platforms are always nice in the early days - the early adopters tend to be like-minded at least in the sense of trying to build a nice community. Hopefully this place stands up to time better than some of the others have over the years.

@Calvinball I’m not on Lemmy, but I can say that my Fediverse experience was above expectations as well 😁 when I first joined, I thought it would be either a deserted place that I would access whenever I remember (like on XMPP and Tumblr, pretty much) or ridden with alt-right people - the way Gab and other “alternative” freeze-peach networks of such kind are. On the contrary, I actually met the coolest alternatives yet.
I last looked at mastodon years ago, and got bored pretty quickly. It was a nice idea, but lacked…. Something. I came back as a Reddit refugee and found a hashtag for every occasion, a substantially expanded fediverse, and a couple of attempts to offer a Reddit like user experience.
I think that missing something was actually two things: 1. A forum where people can organize around moderated communities 2. (And more importantly) A critical mass of users to generate the content that satiates lurkers
@RoyRogersMcFreely Mastodon is really lacking and it tries to emulate the experience of Twitter - which I also find lacking. If you want the best microblog experience, try Calckey or other Misskey forks.
I don’t know if we want something like 1., as it would risk leading to a form of centralization and influence. But 2. is really important. I’m usually also a lurker, yet I try posting stuff whenever and wherever I can.
The nice part about Federation is that if an instance has problematic people they can just be blocked, exploding-heads.com is an alt right cesspool but most of the big instances on Lemmy block them, and I block them on my own (idk if you’ll see this on Mastodon or wherever you are so hope you do)
@cptapathetic I see it on Friendica 😁 alt-right? I genuinely thought it was another tankie home or something. Specially by looking at the communities and posts, as well as the people there who were also on lemmy.ml
And vice versa, if someone’s on Lemmy and I’m on kbin, we’re using the same shared content pool as long as we’re federated and thus we don’t have to worry about sites “dying.” I can’t browse reddit without going to reddit, but I can browse lemmy instances with whatever fediverse instance I please.
I just got here but it does seem almost too good to be true. A community of nice, intelligent people? Did I finally find one? 😅 I didn’t really think it was possible.
Reddit used to be a nice place as well… Things changed as the userbase growed. Kbin will likely have the same fate given time to grow in popularity.
I love it too but I can’t figure out how to filter out all the German language stuff. I’m basically blocking magazines one by one and there’s still so much of it. Why the heck is there so much filtering up?
Click on your username on the top right hand corner of the webpage and go to Settings. Around half-way down your screen, you will see a language interface section. Check on “Undetermined” and “English” and then click save at the bottom of the webpage. This should help you filter posts without having to block magazines one by one.
It’s also very nice not having random downvotes for literally no reason. Some comments on Reddit would just end up getting a random downvote first, preventing it from getting any form of meaningful traction. No idea why, my takes weren’t exactly spicy there, but here that doesn’t seem to happen!

I hope you can keep getting into a better place

I’m cautiously optimistic and hope to see this community grow in a positive way without succumbing to the usual pitfalls of growth.
I’m here for it and loving it rn, though! Thank you as well for your contributions!
