I feel like logging in with Facebook and Google on sites is just as much about them gaining access to scrape more info about you as it is for your “convenience.” While there could be value with Lemmy, it’s not nearly what it is with Facebook and Google. So I would say not likely.

I’m digging it so far. My only things of initial note are the account switch button and logout button are pretty close together and, while I appreciate an option to enlarge content text, I think there needs to be an option to enlarge UI text. Some of the stuff, like the subscription list in the drawer, is tiny for my old eyes (and fat fingers). Oh, and maybe a way to tell you’ve up/downvoted something at a glance other than the vote number changing. I’ve added the app on Obtainium to continue following along. 😊

My personal favorite is the theory that it’s coming ahead of the planned EMP on October 11. 🙄

My bad. I somehow misread and misunderstood that was the problem. I see someone else helped you get there. Hopefully the rest is easier. 😅

Run the program. You should start out with Download highlighted at the top. Put in your Lemmy instance and credentials where it asks. Hit the Download button, which will download a JSON file - it’ll pull stuff like subscriptions from your Lemmy account. At the top, tab over to Upload. Put in the new instance and credentials, and hit Upload. It should pull the JSON file it created when you downloaded and “set up” your new account you’re migrating to. You’ll still need to go in and adjust some things, but your subscriptions (for example) should be there.

EDIT: To clarify, Download is for downloading your “old” account info, and Upload is for uploading that info to your “new” account.

Do you know what instance it was hosted on? The only one I’m seeing was created 11 hours ago with two videos, so I’m assuming that’s not it. It’s possible the instance went down. I’d say it’s possible it was defederated, but we’re on different instances, so it’d have to be a big whoopsie to have been removed by multiple instances.

Wait til you hear what you have to do to get DRM working (Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, etc). Hint: It’s a separate zipped download of Widevine that you have to extract deep in the AppData folder, assuming you’re on Windows.

While I agree with this, it’s kind of a pain in the ass if you use extensions. You have to roundabout install the Web Store through a crx download, tinkering in the settings and enabling dev mode, then use that extension to install other extensions. And may the cosmos grant you mercy if you need to use DRM for Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, etc, and have to download the Widevine DRM stuff separately and unzip it deep in the AppData folder.

I actually came here to make a post and saw this one. I signed up maybe a week or two ago at this point (I don’t remember the exact day now). I went to sign in to start using the account this morning on Jerboa and was hit with a “please verify account” message (nothing on web). I thought I was tripping, but I don’t recall seeing an email - and if I did, it’s long gone now. How would I go about verifying? Same username as this, but on your instance. Thanks!

I’ve heard Matrix is closer to Discord, but not quite as feature-rich - with the tradeoff being open source. I joined the Matrix room for Jerboa development just to follow along, and then my home Matrix instance has a chat it threw me in when first logging into Element that I let roll but mostly ignore. I have no idea what I’m doing or even why I really joined, other than to check it out for myself to see what it’s all about.

I don’t think I’ve been on IRC since 2006ish. It was the gathering ground for my favorite private torrent tracker at the time. We had internet radio and all kinds of fun stuff.

Before that, like back in the AOL days, there were chat-based filesharing server rooms, where you would get a list of files, then request whatever illicit goods you wanted via chat commands.

I’m not really sure what people use IRC for now, but it’s still active.

I’ve made edits and deletes, and as far as I can tell, once the instances sync up, those edits/deletes are synced as well - I have noticed a delay, but it usually kicks in like overnight (for example) when I make a change using my account on lemm.ee for my account on lemmy.world to see it, etc.

Some instances have a 100kb limit, which is understandable, but very inconvenient if you don’t have a way to shrink the filesize down. This is my best estimation as to why you get errors when trying to upload directly to posts, as it’s happened to me bouncing between various instances. There’s usually a statement in the “About this site”/sidebar area on your instance’s main page.

I guess I’m struggling to fully understand the logic of “playing pretend” making you the thing you’re pretending to be. You would need to already be a psychopath, lack empathy, etc, etc. That’s not something you learn.

I would say no. The point of acting is to slip into a role and sell a part - ideally, believably. That’s what makes a great actor.
