As a fellow Dutchy… my current place is the first place I ever lived in that came with a combination oven and microwave.
Previously I’ve always had to supply my own microwave / oven ;-)

Oh definitely that the next couple of weeks will be spent preparing for a new wave. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the reason why Lemmy.ml was down. Yes I know that it was because of a server migration but, that server migration also didn’t happen for no reason ;-)
The first migration wave to Mastodon was very bad. I still remember, that following a person was nearly impossible. Not to mention the fact that, even if you could follow someone, it didn’t automatically meant their messages ended up in your feed.
I know for example that version 0.17.4 of Lemmy (that was released 2 days ago) already has some database optimizations.
From what a quick Google search / Wikipedia hunt showed me is that most of the EU (with the exception of Russia and Finland) are already running on “standard-gauge railway” for their high-speed rail

Yeah I saw it passing by on Mastodon. So I thought, this sounds like it’s definitely up /c/fuck_cars alley 😉
I’m not sure the ‘like email’ thing helps. Email is confusing and not what most people use to connect with others. I don’t know anyone who met via email.
In my experience it at least helps in the sense that, when people ask “why are there more then 1 site?” ? And up to a certain degree you use that to explain the concept of federating.
In theory, I agree with you! A 100%, but the problem is that currently Lemmy doesn’t support migrating your profile to a different server. So that already slightly complicates things. So from the get-go they are forced to make choice. A choice which isn’t clear, what potential consequences are and the fact they currently easily migrate to a different server, obviously doesn’t help.
“Like email” is basically the same description I’ve been using to explain it to non-tech people.
Long story short, onboarding needs to get better. But that also applies for other Fediverse projects (like Mastodon or Friendica).
I just also tried this from the EU (NL to be exact). The moment I disable IPv6 it works, if I re-enable it, my OS prefers to pick IPv6 over IPv4 and thus I get a 502 error again.
After doing a WHOIS, it appears that Lemmy.ml is hosted on OVHCloud.
Edit:
As follow up on that, OVH cloud does appear to be doing some maintenance on their infrastructure: https://www.status-ovhcloud.com/
In short, yes it will take longer to “catch up”.
The longer answer, be patient. This is an issue that will be resolved. I’m sure that the admins are doing their best to get the instance up & running ASAP.
From my experience during the great Twitter migration to Mastodon, you saw the same thing. Especially the “main instance(s)”, mastodon.online and mastodon.social in this case, were overloaded to the brim. After a day or two, the sysadmins and developers were able to stabilize the instance.
The sysadmins in this case were responsible to keep the servers up and running (and scale up where needed). The developers because their code has been “battle tested” for this level of interaction. So changes were needed, to optimize and squash bugs.
I hope this helps 😊
Very very likely that they will get defederated in a day. Most people will most likely interpret it as a Meta’s way of gathering more data.
They both operate on the same protocol called ActivityPub. So that mean it is possible for Lemmy users to interact with Kbin communities (or magazines, as they call them) and for Kbin users to interact with our communities.
Technically it’s also possible for Mastodon (since that also uses ActivityPub) user’s to reply to posts here… It’s not very user friendly, but it is possible.
Tbh, I totally forgot that Ohanian left Reddit like 10 years ago 🤦
Oh sweet, sweet irony.
I am all for spawning up your own instances. The thing is, that’s not always feasible for everybody. Hence my comment ;-)
Dude, that looks great! Awesome job!
I think it would be awesome, if you can get this merged into the UI of Lemmy! That way all users (not just the ones that know about this) can benefit from it.
I am not on lemmy.ml but I have gone through the great Twitter migration. But yes, the servers are most likely smoking right now with all the extra traffic. Not to mention the fact that the underlying code isn’t tested for this amount traffic.
Moral of the story, patience. Server upgrades are on its way and additional code fixes will happen 😊
When life gives you lemons, you make Lemmy? 🤔
Just out of curiosity, where can I find those stats?
I am currently rocking a Shanling M2X which I bought secondhand for €75,- from the local classified ad websites.
Officially supports up the 512Gb but according some reviews it can do up to 2Tb microSD cards ( https://headfonics.com/shanling-m2x-review/ ). I currently have a music collection of about the same size. The Shanling M2X can drive all the IEMs I throw at it, has enough file system support to read just about anything and has WiFi and Bluetooth. Although the WiFi can only be used to wirelessly sync files (which can be a pro but also a con, depending on how you look at it).
However if you don’t feel like going secondhand, Shanling offers a whole bunch of devices meant for offline playback of local files.
