If something’s going to try to grab my attention, it had better be worth my while. I block as many notifications as I can, both on my phone and my computer. I also try to avoid using apps for things unless I have to.
It’s less disinterest and more hostility. The Lemmy devs straight up don’t want us here. Even if they fix the moderation issues, I don’t think it’s a great idea to stay on the platform in the long term.
I’ll never use a Meta/Facebook product if I can help it. They’re pure evil.
Pretty crappy, really, I’ve been laid low with what is most likely a flu since Tuesday. I’m still sick, but I think I’m getting better now. At least it doesn’t seem to be covid(I took two tests and both came back negative).
This isn’t surprising in the least. They’ve been pushing more and more ads recently; trying to get streamers to run them more often. I hate ads, so I have always opted for a short pre-roll so that when its done, viewers won’t have to worry about ads anymore. But I think Twitch will eventually force streamers to run ads every half hour, no matter how many people they scare off.
Glad it’s getting expanded. I live near a light rail station and I use it to get to downtown for work. Between that and the fact that I live between a couple of grocery stores in easy walking distance(not to mention a nice Asian market across the street with $6 banh mi!), I don’t need a car.
Sometimes you just need to throw some hands to prevent worse violence down the line. It isn’t a perfect world and we’re a bunch of upjumped apes. I’m not saying we shouldn’t try to be better than that, but we should at least be realistic about the hand we’ve been dealt. That being said, perhaps you’re right about going the restorative justice route. I just worry because, this is getting normalized way past what anyone should feel comfortable about. Like, I feel we should do everything we can to prevent people from becoming Nazis. If naming and shaming deters people from going down that rabbit hole, I think we at least have to consider it.
In 99% of cases, you would be correct. However, these are Neo-Nazis we’re talking about here. Like, if they got their way, I’d be dead, so so would a lot of other innocent people. Their ideology has caused unspeakable horrors, and it’ll happen again if we let our guard down. There has to be a social cost to being a Nazi. Like, this shit is getting way too close to the right wing mainstream. This isn’t a matter of just “people we don’t like”. They’re dangerous. Name them. Shame them. Ruin their lives. Force their evil ideology back into the deep, dark fringes where it belongs.
It’s alright, just basically Twitter 2. It’s useful for some things. A lot of creatives chose to migrate there, which is nice so that I can network with fellow Twitch streamers and keep up with news on the platform. As much as I like Mastodon, I just wasn’t getting that there. It’s also nice that a bunch of artists I used to follow are there.
Beehaw’s admins have been trying to address some of those issues.
Criticism of the actions of Israel’s government does not make one an antisemite.
Yeah, I think I’ll pass. The Raspberry Pi people hired a former police officer who used their stuff in hidden surveillance. Then when people called them out on it on Twitter, Pi blocked those who did. https://petapixel.com/2022/12/09/raspberry-pi-under-fire-by-creators-who-are-upset-it-hired-a-former-cop/
I’ve been using it for years, first out of disdain for Internet Explorer, now out of disdain for Google Chrome. I just do not trust the corpos at all, and Firefox has always been solid(outside of a few years in the '10s).
Honestly, that article is pretty lousy. It just boils down to “I oppose gay marriage because I don’t like the concept of marriage”. Just seems like veiled homophobia to specifically call out opposition to gay marriage when they could have just written “I oppose the concept of marriage, and this is why”.
Even I could have told you that a vague digital “proof of ownership” of a hideous, mass-produced ape image was a bad investment.
If they’re informative and/or helpful, I don’t mind bots. If they’re those stupid pointless novelty bots that were plaguing Reddit, they can go away.
Sorry! I didn’t realize it was paywalled because I could see the whole thing. Hopefully this should work:
That’s what they should be doing, but it isn’t what they’re going to do, unfortunately.
Kimathi Bradford, a 16-year-old Oakland tech repair intern, has looked into whether there was a way to replace the outdated Chromebook software with a non-Google brand, but it ended up being a lot of work, Kimathi said, and the open-source replacement wasn’t up to par. “It’s like the Fritos of software,” he said. “No one really wants to use it.”
Now, I’m not sure if what they tried was Linux, but I wouldn’t be too surprised. The younger generations grew up with smartphones; I feel as though operating systems will become more streamlined and opaque as time goes on. I suspect we’ll have to contend with the phonification of mainstream computing in the coming years.
just a quick fyi, you’re posting in a beehaw community. you can call out whataboutism without leading with “fuck off”.
Eugene V. Debs ran for president in 1920 while he was serving time for “sedition”(he had been making anti-war and anti-draft speeches during World War I). It’s certainly possible, though incredibly doubtful he’d win. I find that I can’t really count anything out when it comes to Trump, though.
