I’m curious as to what people in the fediverse use daily.
Almost zero. Quit Facebook several years ago. Never used Twitter or X. Once in a blue moon I check LinkedIn or Nextdoor. I do a lot of texting and group texting with my friends. It’s way more fun. A few old friends still prefer email threads, which I’m fine with, too.
I have 6 or so signal threads that are constantly chirping all day and I love it. Seems like such a simple and comfortable place to communicate.
Other than that I’m here and discord. Discord mainly for a group of people I’ve gamed with since our heavy LAN days in the late 90’s-early 10’s.
Reddit, to bring people here and get content
juat reddit before, just lemmy now.
None. Very occasionally reddit if I’m looking for help with something specific. I keep a Facebook account for advertising events on behalf of an organization but never use it otherwise. Twitter never appealed, and I didn’t pursue Mastodon very hard because that format just doesn’t really grab me. I hope the Fediverse keeps going strong and doesn’t end up swallowed by corporations.
Mastodon and BlueSky, from time to time.
Increasingly if the view that microblogging shouldn’t be as big as it is and alternative-social (fediverse etc) should focus on community building.
Lemmy’s reddit-like communities are a start, but need to be taken further.
Back up off me with that social media. This is a forum, I use forums.
Forums are social media.
Those are fighting words, sir.
I know. It inspired my post in unpopular opinions.
I use a lot but primarily Reddit and Lemmy. Got off of Meta a while back, it’s a tough one to kick thanks to network effects.
- Mastodon
- LinkedIn (sadly)
- Twitter (mostly for memes and sports news)
- Lemmy
- Hacker News
- Nostr
How do you like Nostr? I have a friend that’s really passionate about but I just don’t get it.
It needs a more diverse set of topics other than just crypto. I mainly just check it to see what’s up cause I like the protocol.
I use it the least but occasionally post so it gets some more content on there that isn’t just crypto. I generally only post on decentralized social media to be the change I want to see hence why Nostr is included.
Which one is the most active outside of reddit and lemmy?
I’d say Twitter. I get sent a lot of memes from Twitter so I spend more time there.
But usually I send back fediverse memes so friends at least know there’s other places for memes then Instagram, Twitter or Reddit.
Twitter isn’t really that great for discussion. Looking for a more forum type vibe.
Agreed. Forums are tricky because in my experience of you get too many people outside of the niche you’re discussing the quality goes down.
But if you don’t have enough then the Reddit community will take the majority of the discussion away from the forum.
There are some good hobby based ones still out there but discovery is always a challenge. Your best bet is finding someone who’s engaged in discussions you like and seeing where they go for said discussions.
Just firefish.
Was going to say none, but people are listing YouTube as social media? Ok that then. But is YouTube really social media? IMO it’s too hard to have a two way conversation on YouTube for it to be considered social media.
Yeah, I think there is a weird line with YouTube (or Twitch or whatever else that is similar). It has special capabilities (comments and live chat), but it is not conducive to real discourse. The live chats are usually too fast to have any meaningful convos on the things that matter.
If we consider comments social media then many media places with article comment sections would be “social media”.
Pretty much all of them with a few exceptions.
Mastodon, Discord(unfortunately), and Matrix. Stopped using the YouTube about a month ago.
Am I the only one that uses TikTok? It’s that and Lemmy for me, nothing else. Oh, and infrequently reddit for the subreddit created for the city I live in
I use TikTok
I recently got into it and I feel dirty
Why? If it’s American Propaganda, know that that is mainly financed by US social media because TikTok is doing so well. It isn’t a Chinese propaganda machine despite what uninformed fools will tell you.
Does Discord count? If not then I don’t use anything else.
Of course. It’s a proprietary, privacy invasive platform with bad encryption where you interact with other people.
Discord and YouTube, then
My bad! How silly of me.
*no encryption
It actually has encryption. Just no E2EE. The keys are just stored at Discord afaik. So the company should be able to read all of your messages. Just hackers shouldn’t be able to do so as long as they do not retrieve the keys.
Bluesky. It’s like a Twitter reboot. The username is still too small and that’s it. It’s too small.
Bluesky I use a fair amount, nothing else comes close to that and lemmy though. I guess if you count just watching but never liking or commenting on videos, YouTube.
I like to do drive by gawkings of Nextdoor. I live in southern CA so people get absolutely, hilariously deranged about some things. Coyotes and bike lanes are probably going to cause the downfall of civilization, based on the fuss about them.
