What is concerning is his wording about “to leave threads”. Consider that whatever saying in this interview is carefully laid out beforehand. What reason is there for a corporation that is living of it’s users to just so casually let them leave like they please with everything that is giving value to Meta? He is not talking about wanting the users to leave threads, but to be able to migrate either direction. Who is going to win that fight in the end? The corporation who’s solely goal is to win or the free and open community that is so tolerant that it invites the beast it fled from?

Also there is a lot to gain. The users base of the fediverse and it’s infrastructure grew by 5x in the last two years: https://fedidb.org/ Meta has a big interest in extinguishing a competitor before it profits from the bandwagon effect.

This really bugs me at work sometimes. I’m a designer and I often have to split up images in several mails because others don’t understand the concept of archives. Or even worse: send the photos as “excel image file” (slapping them all in a excel sheet). I even once had a printery tell me my file was corrupt because it was (accidentally on my part) compressed as 7z. Oh how I would love to send files more often as 7zip… But that’s black magic apparently.

Netflix definitely increased 1080p compression (or said better, nerfed it). 1080p even looks a little pixelated on my mobile phone now when it looked great on a PC monitor a few years ago.

I feel you. I’ve had struggled with worrying a lot, too. Biggest insight for me was that worries are first of all just fantasies about the future. Start asking yourself more often: “what if everything goes well?” Instead of “what if everything goes wrong?”. Realize, in the realm of fantasies those two questions are equals. Your mom said that she thinks the engine sounded funny. And that’s it for all we know. Maybe she even just misheard. Also, start tackling real problems that may arise step by step. Stringing along worries before they have even arrived is of course paralyzing because fantasies are endless. You often will realize that all those “follow up” problems you fantasized about will never arise because you are very well capable of solving the real problems right away. Friends and family will love to help you if you ask.

Yeah the hardware I’m running can easily run cyberpunk and any other modern game with satisfying FPS. Yet, it has no 8th gen CPU so I’m not able to upgrade. If I would upgrade my CPU just for win 11 I would have to replace my mainboard and then my GPU would bottleneck which would be, well, sad, so I would feel like I need to upgrade it too … And well, we know where this leads. I’m just not in for this ride just for Windows 11. I already use Linux on a different drive and prepare to fully switch to Linux. It’s just for gaming that I still use Windows and I feel like Linux could really “profit” from Microsofts decision to ditch Windows 10 under this conditions.

Also related to streaming services: the horizontal scrolling layout the movies are displayed in is the absolute worst thing that has come to streaming services. It’s bad to search in, it is uncomfortable to scroll and it displays too little items.
