I think if a instance owner decides to try to profit, it can happen. They could let advertisers have an account that promotes products and allow such posts to bypass community rules and disregard vote counts. You could theoretically profit from running a lemmy instance. But now your instance risks defederation and user might start leaving.
Edit: I think the smarter thing could be just asking for more donations than is needed to run the server, and pocket the excess funds. That could go on undetected as long as you falsify your operating costs to make it seem as if more funding is required. I mean I don’t know if someone could actually make a living of asking for absurd amounts of donations.
Cat on the left looks like he’s grinning at the death of reddit, while cat on the right is just sad that he’ll have one less platform to post his photos to.
Ahh, it seems like I’ve mistaken the cause. Thank you for the info.
The secret ingredient is crime
The instance called lemmygrad promotes an ideology that’s considered extremist by many instance owners, so it has been defederated by many big instances. The other ones one the list that are defederated because of an unusual number of users to content ratio, leading many instance owners to suspect that they are bot accounts used for spam so any instance with these suspicions are also defederated, not because of ideology, buy simply because of the perceived spam threat. Now I don’t know how true is the bot threat, but that is what people have been saying is the reason for defederation.
You are not allowed to leave Lemmy once you join. You’re here for eternity.
No, this just sound like some lazy person’s weird vision of a future without paper because writing takes too much energy.
(The lazy person is me)
I wonder what would happen if redditors just start ignoring rules… 🤔
Join us at lemmy.dbzer0.com. We’re federated with most instances including Beehaw. And no Tankies or Fascists are here. lemmygrad and explodingheads are both defederated.
Don’t care, my captain already defederated them. Y’all need to pressure your admins to defederate them. An outsider like me ain’t gonna influence policies of instances I’m not a member of.
I don’t think its digital handwriting replacing paper handwriting, it will just be typing. Writing takes more energy and we humans are lazy. I’ll bet most kids in schools rather type their homework rather than write it. I know from experience.
Bundle of Sticks, aka Fascism. 🤔
Lol people still use SMS/iMessage? I mean aren’t people these days using discord for grouo chat?
If I’m a bot I have to tell you. It’s in the internet constitution.
I’ll report them for harassment because everyone who knows my birthday does not give me gifts, so they must be a stalker that somehow found out my birthday.
Um wtf, I’m starting to doubt if I’m a human. 🤔
Beep Boop, am totally not a bot. Nothing to see here, please carry on.
Lemmy isn’t blocked in Hong Kong? Oh I guess its much more difficult since they’ll have to block all lemmy instances.
Anyways, here in the United States of America, tap water is safe to drink, except in certain places like Flint, Michigan, but thats more of a lead pipe issue than a germ issue. I regularly drink water directly out of the tap, I don’t have any health issues that result from drinking water.
Supposed to go like
How many redditors do you want to piss off and quit your platform?
Spaz: Yes
