The moment there isn’t federal law to lean on, I hope for and expect court cases predicated on the fact that there’s no basis for an employer to care more about whether someone has smoked cannabis in the past thirty days than they do about whether that same employee gets blackout drunk every Friday and Saturday night.

Neither of those details of their lives speaks to someone’s sobriety at work, and the basis for considering marijuana usage as somehow “worse” is rooted directly in the racist basis for policies enacted at the very start of cannabis prohibition.

The reality is that drug tests just like felony checks are very good filters for bad employees.

If this is true, drug testing should start at the CEO.

Sure, everything has bugs and bugfixes are good. It’s just not fair to characterize this entire release as bugfixes and menu adjustments, IMO.

Are you a KDE user? I switched from Gnome 3 when Plasma 5 was new, the very moment it seemed close enough to finished to expect reasonable stability. It was a huge departure from KDE4, and after trying literally every other DE to find happiness away from Gnome (that’s all I’m going to say about that) over the course of several years, it was such a welcome relief.

Plasma 5 was not only a life preserver for folks bailing from Gnome, it also showed they’d learned from their own mistakes with KDE4, which many users felt was just as much a trainwreck as Gnome 3.

There’s a lot going on under the hood with the change to QT6 as noted, and that alone merits a version number change, IMO. I haven’t tracked a whole lot of specific features, but I know there are a lot of wayland refinements and HDR support coming, and I’m doubtful that the many pointieststick blogposts have been doing nothing but writing about bugfixes and menu changes, even if I haven’t read every single one of them.

The general default look and feel maybe isn’t being radically changed, but this is Linux, and more importantly KDE; we’re all about theming and customization anyway, right?

Most importantly they aren’t throwing out the baby with the bathwater. They did it (intentionally or not) with 4, and then (in my perception) they were forced to do it with Plasma 5 because of KDE4.

After living through the transition from Gnome 2 to 3, and KDE 3.5 to 4, then feeling the relief when Plasma 5 just absolutely crushed it, I’m very happy to see them upgrading the undercarriage and making things generally better instead of building it all from the ground up again.

Well, they are going to have to do everything perfectly. One screw up of any kind and for the next ten years every discussion of diversity or women in leadership positions is going to include a Republican saying, “Yeah, well just look at what they did to St. Paul.”

My last epson experience was about 5 years ago, (edit: holy cow maybe more like 10+ years ago. why does time go so fast?) so they may have gone downhill, appreciate the update. I had 2 in a row and both were good with Linux support and general lack of fussiness.

Thirded. Get an Brother inkvestment model. No bullshit, it just does your bidding, like a printer should. And the ink lasts a very long time.

Yes, everyone says get a B&W laser printer. If that fits your needs do so. We have kids that want or need to print in color fairly often, and color laser was out of the question last time we purchased.

Brother is the now only brand I look at after decades of buying consumer printers. If absolutely forced not to buy Brother, I’d go with Epson. I used to love Canon, but each model started incorporating more and more bullshit, and I found their ink to be both expensive and short lived. HP is the king of printer bullshit, but Canon seems to want to sit on their court in recent years.

First we’d have to wrest control of florida from the grip of the “I got mine” “Slavery was a benefit” and “Don’t say gay” maga boomer assholes who control the state from the top down.

Then and only then would there be the slightest possibility that anyone in power in Florida would advocate for anything that would actually help anyone.

The word forced is right there in your sentence, what’s hard to fathom? A third party vote is effectively a vote for Trump. I’m not going to argue with you if you still feel morally compelled to vote third party - but let’s not pretend otherwise.

From a capitalist perspective it’s ideal if your workers are on the verge of poverty, living paycheck to paycheck. That’s exactly where you want them.

People in that situation won’t complain. Won’t stand up for themselves or their rights. Will take poor treatment and deal with it. Will work in unethical or even illegal ways and keep quiet because they have no choice.

Even better if you can tie people’s health insurance to their job, then you’ve really got them by the balls.

I’ve got a pretty decent job, and earn pretty good money. But I’m the only earner in a family of four and no, we haven’t made all the best financial decisions at times.

What you have described is exactly where we live, and while there isn’t that much I want to stand up to at work in the first place, 100% I don’t make any waves that don’t have a basis in the hard facts of my job, and for this very reason. I’d like to go in an ask for a merit based raise, I’d like to fight harder for more people to be hired in our (spread very thin) department, and there are a few other things I’d like to at least ask for and feel OK about standing firm on.

But I don’t, because I don’t want to jeopardize what I’ve got.
